Newsletter – 24 NOVEMBER 2020

Good day All Members

It’s amazing how time has flown during this challenging year and once again we would like to thank all our members and staff for their fantastic support over this year. With December and the holiday season upon us, and all the celebrations approaching, we want to wish our members and respective families a happy holidays and season’s greetings. To anyone travelling we wish you a safe trip.

It will be our pleasure being able to host and welcome everyone during this period. The Club will be open on the following Mondays 14th, 21st & 28th December as well, although we will be closed on Christmas Day 25th December and New Year’s day 1st January. We look forward to welcoming all members and visitors at our beautiful course.

Over the last few weeks we have fertilised the course from tees to greens, treated the greens for algae, poa annua and moss, double verticut and vertidrained the greens to assist with speeding up the greens. Due to the weather conditions, we have unfortunately lost numerous trees but thankfully the playing area was not affected.

Captain’s Corner – November 2020

Howsit everyone, can you believe it, we are just about in the silly season and Christmas will be upon us before you know it.

I could almost devote this whole blog to the ladies’ section because they have definitely been the newsmakers for the past month but before I do let’s do some general info.

I am sure you have noticed that quite a number of trees have fallen over recently on the course. This is due to a lot of our trees reaching their lifespan age. I did a little digging and found this information about trees and their lifespans.

“More than 500 oak species grace the planet, united in the genus Quercus. The oak species vary in size and appearance, and also in lifespans. Under ideal conditions, some species of oak tree live 150 years or more, but short-lived varieties die after about 50 to 60 years. Individual lifespans also depend on environmental conditions, pests and diseases, and commercial development.”

Last weekend a storm went through our course and took down eight trees with it. We do ask that you be patient with the removal of these trees as it does take a bit of time. Of course, the trees that fell, hardly come into play on the golf course. LOL

It has been decided to stop the R100 lucky draw due to lack of interest but the committee is definitely looking at holding a Captain’s Draw evening again very soon.

Watch the notice boards and newsletters for more info regarding this.

Our course took a bit of a beating when that heat wave came through recently but now it has recovered nicely and looking good again. Recently our greens were a bit slow but Derek and his team are working on this and it should be back to normal this weekend. Thanks Derek, great job.

Ok, let me tell you, our ladies’ section has been extremely busy the last 30 days and we at the club are very grateful for the spirit that they bring to the club.

Let’s start off by saying congratulations to our lady president, Christine Els, for achieving a hole-in-one on the 11th hole. Apparently, this is her first one, congratulations sweetheart.

Another drive for food parcels was held and even though it was the third drive of this kind this year, they managed to pack about 100 food parcels and these were presented to our staff.

A Mixed Open was arranged by the Ladies Section as well and this was held on the 15th November after the first one had to be postponed due to inclement weather. It went ahead on the 15th and I honestly think it was a major success. We had a nice full field and some great prizes were won. Thanks to the Ladies committee for this initiative, awesome and well done all who assisted and donated for the day.

Here are some of the prize-winners:

A great day was had by all.

The ladies also celebrated two very important birthdays this month, Cos turned 97 and Jenny Johnson turned 80 earlier in the year. I know a lot of the members always say they hope that they will also be that spritely when they are that age. Congratulations ladies.

CONGRATULATIONS.

Congratulations goes out to a number of our members who have become new dads in the past few weeks, namely; Ray Schutte, Ollie Webb and Marne Steenkamp.

That’s about it for this month, hope you all have a fantastic month and see you next time around.

Happy birthday to all our members who celebrate their birthdays during the month of November.

Captains Corner – October 2020

Well, October is upon us and with it we have entered Lockdown Level One as announced by our president, Mr Cyril Ramaphosa. With this level we have announced a number of changes at the club, slowly but surely getting us back to total normality. Some of the changes are as follows:

  • We have changed back to using two tees on a Saturday, note for now this is only on a Saturday
  • There is now an 8-minute break between tee times
  • With the advent of two tees there is now an afternoon and morning field on a Saturday again
  • This also means that the ladies’ section have their own designated tee times back and run their own competition
  • The Grab & Go concept at halfway house has been changed back to a normal sit-down snack
  • We now also have our prizegiving back and even the fines collection in the morning field is back
  • The showers are open again but you must remember to bring your own towel and toiletries

I must admit it really is great to be able to see the bulk of the morning field at prizegiving again and to be able to chat to all the buddies there. I am sure the feeling is the same in the afternoon field. With regard to the other changes I must admit I do prefer the Grab & Go concept as I do feel that it speeds up play a lot but the majority of the members do prefer to have a sit-down halfway snack or meal.

We received news about Danus, our greenkeeper, recently to say that he has recovered nicely and we ask that you all please say a little prayer for him that he may recover completely and be back with us sooner than later.

The monthly Captain’s draw has not been restored yet but we do have a monthly lucky draw which is held virtually on Zoom. The tickets are R100 each and are available at the pub or the members could make use of an EFT to the clubs account using the phrase “Lucky Draw” with your name as the reference. You may buy as many tickets as you like. The first draw was held on Friday the 9th October and the winner was Grant Symes. He won himself a very nice little R3500. 60% of the ticket money collected is paid out as a prize and the balance goes to the club. The ladies at the bar have already started selling tickets for the next draw which will be held at the end of October.

I think a huge word of thanks must go out to Derek and the team for preparing a great course for us to play on, on a daily basis. I must tell you I get to visit a number of the courses in our area and I am always very proud to get back to our course because ours is definitely a lot better than most.

Our Ladies Section held another drive to collect food for the caddies and staff and even though it was the third one this year the response was still very good and they were able to pack approximately 100 food packs which will be handed out shortly to those who need them. Thanks again to all who contributed. You don’t realise how much this is appreciated until you see the looks on the recipient’s faces when the packs are handed out. Well done ladies.

The Tee Totallers

I would like to tell you about a group of Sunday morning golfers at our club. If you hang around Krugersdorp Golf Club you might have heard about a group called the Tee Totallers or if you have ever played on a Sunday morning you would have seen some golfers wearing these purple golf shirts.

The Tee Totallers are a group of golfers who get together every Sunday and play their own competition as well as entering the club competition if there is one. On 4th October 2015 this group was formed starting off with ten members being mainly a family affair. These are the originals:

Now the group consists of 42 players and six of the original 10 are still active in the group. Every Sunday they book up to six fourballs in the field for their members. Each member lets the organiser know if they are available or not and a draw is done grouping all the players into fourballs for the Sunday matches. This is done by the brother and sister duo, Greg Douglas and Michelle Edwards.

Above we have Michelle with her son Kyle and Greg next to them. These two do an amazing job, with doubles and singles knockouts played within the group and trophies and prizes presented to the winners. There is also an eclectic held every quarter in the different handicap groups and trophies are won for these winners as well. So, the competition is also very healthy within the group. This year the group turned five years old and there were cupcakes for all to celebrate and some of the originals, such as Bruce and Dale Franklin pitched up to enjoy a drink with us as well.

The group also normally has an end of year tour and this year they are going to Highland Gate in December. Enjoy guys and it is great having someone like you lot at the club.

Open Day

An Open Day is been organised by the Ladies Section on the 1st November and I am speaking under correction here but I think it is already fully booked. You can check with Michelle – 0724056782 or Pam – 0723479623 to see if there are any spots available. It will be held on Sunday 1st November in the morning and there will be braai packs for sale in the afternoon with some fantastic prizes at stake. I suggest you get dialling immediately if you still want a spot.

Something I managed to retrieve from the Ladies newsletter regarding etiquette on the golf course:

I would like to mention a special birthday before I sign off, the lady who looks after the gardens at the club is a very special person and this year on the 6th April, she turned a spritely 80 years young. On behalf of all the members we would like to thank you for all the work you do in our gardens. Always great seeing you at the course and may you have many more wonderful years ahead.

Happy birthday to all members who celebrate their birthdays during the month of October, hope you all have a fantastic day.
